Recently undergoing a $10 Million renovation, Mahekal – whose name represents the phonetic Spanish pronunciation of magical – has elevated the resort from a three-star to a four-star property. Adding amenities such as state-of-the art Wifi, refined cuisine and new bungalow units with air conditioning. And in keeping with the ‘unplugged’ vibe, televisions are not present in any of the private rooms.

“Mahekal is very different than almost anything in Playa del Carmen. It’s very distinct,” said Lamont Meek, chief operating officer of Circa Capital, co-owner and manager of the property, adding that it appeals to travelers looking for authentic, unplugged vacations in a low density, village-like setting.
Taking its inspiration from Julia Chaplin’s book, Gypset Style, the resort is adorned in bold colors that create a bohemian-Mexican ambiance, featuring Missoni-esque fabrics in the lobby and fireplace seating area, to bright orange ping pong tables and cobalt blue billiard tables in the main lobby bar and activity center.
“What we focus on is a natural, very free-flowing experience where it’s really up to the customer to decide whether they want an active lifestyle while they’re here or if they want complete relaxation,” Meeks said. “Mahekal appeals to a very unplugged kind of customer – someone who want to come to Mexico for a real experience.”

Good Planning Created Smooth Travels
Setting the stage for a hassle-free journey, Renee and Tony boarded a United Airlines flight, drawn by the convenience and privileges offered by their Priority Status.
“With United, we knew we could count on reliable service, especially during unforeseen travel disruptions. Fortunately, our journey was seamless, with a slight delay in landing swiftly offset by the efficient immigration process.”
Thanks to their Priority status, luggage promptly appeared on the carousel, and they swiftly passed through the Nothing to Declare Customs door. Navigating through the vibrant array of rental car agencies, tour guides, and taxi drivers to the pre-arranged transfer service, Amstar, they were quickly whisked away to the resort without any hassles.
Great First Impressions of Mahekal Beach Resort
“With the first step upon arrival, we were greeted by the warm and generous hospitality of the very courteous staff.”
The sprawling property, nestled within a lush tropical garden, exuded a relaxed village atmosphere set right on the peach. “We couldn’t wait to explore it!”
With a first walk through, they instantly noticed the Palapa-thatched roof bungalows and common buildings that dotted the landscape, none exceeding two stories in height.
“The ambiance of the resort truly embraced the natural beauty of the surroundings.”
After checking in, they were escorted to their private room, a charming single-story palapa bungalow with a covered patio adorned with traditional Mexican beach-style furnishings.
“We enjoyed partial views of the sea, accompanied by the soothing sound of rolling waves that granted us instant relaxation from a long flight.”
The private bungalow provided an array of amenities, including a closet, safe, air conditioning, ceiling fan, and a cozy seating area. “The thoughtful placement of reading lights, side tables, and easily accessible electrical outlets added a touch of convenience to our stay, ensuring that all our needs were met.”
The room’s décor exuded brightness and tranquility, featuring light colors and comfortable furnishings that blended seamlessly with the coastal ambiance.
The bed and linens provided a perfect sanctuary for rest and rejuvenation, while the well-equipped bathroom ensured comfort and convenience throughout the stay.
And the resort was full of delightful surprises, like room service delivered on vintage bicycles with baskets!

One of the absolute high points of their stay was the catch of the day!
“We got to watch as a small crew voyaged offshore to go fishing for our lunch.” As an avid fisherman, Tony was impressed by watching the action from beginning to end. “It was one of my favorite parts of the entire trip, and so delicious!”
