A Perfect Blend of Adventure and Relaxation

Latrissa’s trip began in the hotel zone of Cancun, which she describes as the Las Vegas of Mexico. Cancun offers an exciting combination of beachfront hotels, luxury shopping, vibrant restaurants, and a lively nightlife scene. Whether you’re planning a family getaway or looking for a fun-filled vacation with friends, Cancun has something for everyone.
While the city has plenty to offer, from bustling nightclubs to upscale dining options, Latrissa notes that the entertainment is primarily centered around the resorts, with fewer options for a quieter, more laid-back experience. Cancun’s beachfront hotels provide the perfect location to unwind, but for those seeking something beyond the beach, there are endless activities to choose from.
Weather and Transportation
Latrissa’s stay took place from March 22 to March 29, experiencing mild weather with temperatures ranging from the low 60s at night to the low 70s during the day. This temperate weather is perfect for exploring Cancun’s lively atmosphere and its nearby attractions.
Transportation was seamless, with hotel transfers and taxis providing easy access to local attractions, from the resort area to nearby towns.
Meals and Restaurants: A Feast for the Senses
While Cancun offers a wide array of dining options, one thing Latrissa couldn’t get enough of was the local street food. Her personal favorite? Pork tacos, a delicious and traditional dish served by local vendors and restaurants. Cancun’s culinary scene is filled with opportunities to sample everything from fresh seafood to authentic Mexican dishes. Whether it’s enjoying fresh guacamole or savoring tacos al pastor, the flavors of Cancun never disappoint.
For those who want a more upscale dining experience, Cancun also offers gourmet restaurants with various international cuisines to satisfy every palate.
After four vibrant nights in Cancun, Latrissa ventured south to Akumal, a small beach town located about an hour and 20 minutes from Cancun. Akumal offers a much quieter and more relaxed atmosphere, perfect for those looking to unwind. With its pristine beaches and jungle vibes, Akumal is ideal for travelers wanting to disconnect from the hustle and bustle of larger cities.
During her stay, Latrissa participated in an ALG Vacations workshop and had the chance to explore the surrounding areas. Although there’s not much to do in Akumal aside from relaxing on the beach, Latrissa found it to be the perfect destination for a peaceful retreat.
Must See: Attractions and Experiences
While Cancun is bustling with entertainment, it also offers cultural experiences like visits to Mayan ruins and cenotes. Latrissa recommends the following must-see attractions:
Mayan Ruins: Cancun and the surrounding areas are home to Chichen Itza, Tulum, and Coba, three of the most famous and historically significant Mayan sites in Mexico. Whether you’re an archaeology enthusiast or just want to explore ancient civilizations, these ruins are a must.
5th Avenue in Playa del Carmen: A vibrant pedestrian street full of shops, cafes, and restaurants, offering a true taste of Mexican culture.
Cenotes: Latrissa had the chance to visit the Vesica Cenote, an underground natural swimming hole that is a highlight for anyone visiting the Yucatan Peninsula.
Must Eat: Tacos, Tacos, and More Tacos
Tacos: Whether it’s pork tacos from local stands or fish tacos, the options are endless
Insider Tips and Must-Do Activities
Leave the Resort: Cancun and the surrounding areas have so much more to offer beyond the resorts. Explore Mayan ruins, swim in cenotes, or even visit a nearby local village to get a deeper look at Mexican life.
Pack Layers: With fall temperatures varying, bring layers to stay comfortable during the cooler evenings.
Be Prepared for Rain: Bring rain gear or an umbrella—spring weather can be unpredictable.
Do’s:
Do bring US Dollars or Pesos – Exchanging currency before arriving is ideal, as airport and hotel exchanges often have unfavorable rates.
Do venture out to explore the local nightlife, clubs, bars, and restaurants—there’s something for everyone in Cancun.
Do embrace local customs and etiquette, such as bargaining at local markets and engaging with vendors.
Don’ts:
Don’t keep a low profile at resorts—getting to know the staff can lead to upgrades and better experiences.
Don’t agree to the first price—haggling is common in Mexico, so don’t be afraid to negotiate.
Don’t rush your trip—there’s so much to see and do in Cancun and Akumal, so plan a few days for relaxation as well.
