Renee and Tony’s adventure began in the Le Marche region, known for its picturesque hill towns and rolling landscapes. From Urbino, the birthplace of Renaissance painter Raphael, to Pesaro, known for its seaside charm, they explored the region’s medieval towns and vibrant culture. Corinaldo and Ascoli Piceno, with their stunning architecture and historical significance, were also highlights, offering an authentic experience of Italy off the beaten path.
As they ventured through this scenic region, Renee and Tony indulged in the local cuisine, savoring regional specialties like crescia (Marchigiana flatbread), coniglio in porchetta (rabbit in porchetta), and the renowned truffles that Le Marche is famous for.
Next, Renee and Tony journeyed south to Naples, a city full of history, vibrant streets, and world-renowned cuisine. As they explored the UNESCO-listed historic center, they discovered the bustling street of Spaccanapoli, lined with artisan shops, bakeries, and historic churches. A visit to Piazza del Gesù Nuovo and Via San Gregorio Armeno, known for its artisan nativity scenes, added to the cultural richness of Naples.
One of the most iconic culinary experiences in Naples was the authentic Neapolitan pizza. Renee also indulged in sfogliatella (a sweet pastry) and babà (rum-soaked cake), classic local desserts. A visit to Mozzarella di Bufala farms and a taste of frittura di mare (fried seafood) completed their Naples culinary adventure.
Renee and Tony ended their Italian journey in Rome, where history and culture come alive at every turn. The iconic Colosseum, an ancient amphitheater where gladiators once fought, was a must-see, and a guided tour of the Roman Forum took them through the heart of ancient Roman life. Renee’s visit to the Pantheon, a well-preserved testament to Roman engineering, was an awe-inspiring experience, and they marveled at St. Peter’s Basilica and the beauty of Piazza Navona.
A highlight of their Roman experience was a visit to the Vatican Museums, home to priceless art collections, including Michelangelo’s frescoes in the Sistine Chapel. They also visited the Trevi Fountain, where the tradition of tossing a coin to ensure a return to Rome was a perfect way to end their Roman adventures.
